Car Inspection Comparison

Roadworthy Certificate (RWC) Pre-Purchase Car Inspection
Purpose Checks if a car is safe and legal to drive on the road (basic safety standard). Checks the full condition of the car before you buy it (mechanical, cosmetic, history).
Focus Brakes, tyres, lights, seatbelts, steering, basic structural integrity. Engine, transmission, suspension, accident repairs, bodywork, service history, overall wear and tear.
Level of Detail Minimal – only enough to meet legal safety requirements. Comprehensive – detailed report on almost everything about the car.
When Needed Selling a car (in most states, like Victoria) or re-registering a car. Before buying any used car, to know exactly what you're paying for.
Outcome A pass or fail – you either get a certificate or you don’t. A report showing the car’s current condition, issues, future repair costs. No pass/fail.
Provider Licensed mechanics approved by the transport authority. Independent car inspectors, mechanics, or specialist companies.

In short:

  • An RWC tells you a car is safe to drive today.
  • A Pre-Purchase Inspection tells you if the car is actually worth buying.
